Ripple, also known as XRP, is a decentralized payment network designed to replace the traditional money transfer system, SWIFT. It is powered by its native cryptocurrency, XRP, and operates on a consensus model in which all nodes given access to the network must validate transactions. This model ensures that payments on the network are secure and efficient, with transactions typically being completed in just four to five seconds.

One unique feature of XRP is that all coins were placed into circulation when the network was first launched. This means that miners receive their validation fees from a charge of .00001 XRP per transaction processed on the underlying XRP Ledger (XRPL). This makes Ripple stand out in the cryptocurrency industry and can affect the price of XRP.

Despite a lawsuit brought by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2020, Ripple has remained one of the top 10 cryptocurrencies by volume. The network is still promoted as a superior payment system, although the lawsuit alleges that Ripple should have registered as a security, a claim that has been consistently denied.

In addition to being used as a means of payment, XRP also functions as an intermediary on the XRPL network, enabling the exchange of digital and fiat currencies through its DeFi protocol. This means that XRP is used in the processing of digital and fiat currency transfers on the XRPL network. Ripple Labs, the company behind XRP, was originally founded with the goal of enhancing global payment capabilities rather than replacing the existing financial system.
