What is Radicle?

Radicle is an open-source, decentralized coding collaboration network that aims to empower developers to work together on code without the need for third-party intermediaries. The platform is powered by the RAD token, an Ethereum-based ERC20 token that enables reduced or zero fees when interacting with Radicle smart contracts, as well as governance through voting and proposals.

The history of Radicle dates back to 2018, when Alexis Sellier and Eleftherios Diakomichalis founded the project with the goal of creating a sustainable and equitable way to finance and maintain public software projects. In 2020, the Radicle Foundation was established in Switzerland as a non-profit organization committed to developing peer-to-peer technologies that promote internet freedom.

The Radicle network is built on top of the Radicle Link, a peer-to-peer gossip protocol with a configurable and distributed version control backend. Initially, the protocol's focus is on Git, but it is designed to be versatile enough to be used on top of other systems. The Radicle Link uses gossip-based replication to spread Git repositories, allowing them to be hosted and shared without the need for centralized servers. This means that developers can share and work together on Git repositories without relying on intermediaries like hosted servers, as all data on the network is stored locally by network members.

One of the main objectives of the Radicle project is to create a durable collaborative infrastructure that respects users' freedoms without relying on trusted gatekeepers or state rulers. The other objective is to employ the newly established sovereign financial infrastructure (Bitcoin, Ethereum, DeFi) to generate new value for developers.

Radicle launched its test-net in November 2020, and in February 2021, the RAD token was launched. The platform is designed to provide a sustainable, equitable, and censorship-resistant alternative to centralized code collaboration platforms like GitHub and GitLab. By leveraging the power of peer-to-peer technologies and blockchain, Radicle aims to promote internet freedom and foster a community-led, self-sustaining network for software collaboration.
