What is Golem?

The Golem Network is a decentralized platform that aims to create a global market for computing power. It facilitates the use of flexible tools to enable developers to securely distribute and generate revenue from their software. The goal of the network is to become a building block for future Internet service providers and software development, allowing users and creators to create, compute, and earn by building ambitious software solutions by accessing computing resources across the platform.

One of the key features of the Golem Network is its peer-to-peer network, where users can join on an equal basis to trade computation and split up complicated tasks into subtasks on the network. The platform also has an in-built feature that allows for Ethereum-based transactions, enabling users to perform direct payments between requestors, providers, and software developers.

In addition to its role as a decentralized market for computing power, the primary function of the Golem Network is to serve as an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS). To this end, the platform offers a variety of tools to users, including Golem SDKs (Software Development Kits) that include requestors and providers tutorials, execution environments like Wasm, VM, and SGX stack, Python, JavaScript, and Rust API, and a community-curated list of resources, links, projects, tools, and applications.

To access and use the Golem Network, users can purchase GLM, an Ethereum token that allows them to pay or receive payment for resources via the Golem protocol. GLM is a migrated version of GNT, a former ERC20-based token used to perform peer-to-peer transactions for renting idle digital resources. GLM can be purchased on various DEX listings.

The Golem Network was founded by Piotr Janiuk, who serves as the acting CEO and CTO, and Aleksandra Skrypczak, the co-founder and lead software engineer of the Golem ecosystem. Skrypczak and her team published the GLM project's whitepaper in November 2016.
