What is Elrond?

MultiversX (EGLD) is a blockchain protocol that aims to revolutionize the speed of transactions using sharding. The platform is designed as a technology ecosystem for the new internet, encompassing fintech, decentralized finance, and the Internet of Things. MultiversX boasts a smart contract execution platform capable of processing 15,000 transactions per second, with a six-second latency and transaction fees as low as $0.001.

The platform rewards active participants and its community with EGLD tokens, which is Elrond's native token. EGLD acts as a currency to pay for network usage and a medium of exchange between platform users and validators. Developers can deploy smart contracts, protocols, and dApps on the platform using EGLD. EGLD holders can also vote on network decisions, as it functions as a governance token.

The co-founders of MultiversX are Beniamin and Lucian Mincu and Lucian Todea. They founded MultiversX in 2017 as a solution to the problem of blockchain scalability, which they believed to be the most pressing problem facing the industry. Prior to MultiversX, the Mincu brothers co-founded MetaChain Capital, a digital asset investment fund, and ICO Market Data, an aggregator of information around initial coin offerings. Lucian Todea is a serial tech entrepreneur, having previously founded Soft32 and mobilPay.

MultiversX differentiates itself from other blockchain platforms by offering a high scalability solution for enterprise use, decentralized applications, and the new internet economy. Its adaptive state sharding architecture shards state, transactions, and network, allowing it to scale by adding an additional shard when the throughput demand is unmet. The network has 2,169 validator nodes split into four shards: three execution shards capable of 5,400 transactions per second each and one coordination shard, the "Metachain." MultiversX also supports developers building on the platform, allowing them to earn 30% of the smart contract fees as royalties.

To increase adoption, the company maintains a supply of EGLD tokens to stake on the network during its first year, with validator nodes receiving a 36% annual percentage rate.

MultiversX implements three types of segmentation: state, transactions, and network, using the parallel processing method to speed up the time and increase the number of transactions. The platform uses Adaptive State Sharding to scale while sharing infrastructure to support a growing number of applications/transactions on the ledger. They divide the network into four shards: three execution shards that process transactions, validating 5,400 transactions per second, and Metachain is the fourth shard that coordinates and completes transactions.

MultiversX developers combined three sharding methods to create their own unique adaptive one. The state sharding method distributes the history of the network across different sections of the network, or shards. Segments have their own ledger, and nodes store the state of each segment. The transaction sharding method maps transactions to segments and processes them in parallel, while nodes capture the state of the entire network. The network sharding method groups nodes into segments and then processes them, optimizing communications.

In conclusion, MultiversX is a unique blockchain platform that seeks to offer an extremely fast transaction speed solution using sharding. The platform's main selling point is its high scalability, with its adaptive state sharding architecture allowing it to scale by adding an additional shard when the throughput demand is unmet. MultiversX also supports developers building on the platform, allowing them to earn 30% of the smart contract fees as royalties, and it rewards active participants with EGLD tokens.
